What does the term “EU medicinal product” mean?

EU medicinal products are original drugs that are produced in an EU country and then parallel imported or reimported to Germany. Reimports are medicinal products that are produced in Germany, sold abroad and reimported to Germany. Parallel imports are medicinal products that are produced outside of Germany by multinational pharmaceuticals companies and then imported to Germany.

What are the advantages of EU medicinal products?

Prices for identical original drugs can vary enormously from one EU country to the next. This is due to the difference in health systems across the EU. MPA Pharma imports medicinal products that are considerably more expensive in Germany than in other EU countries and distributes them at lower cost in Germany via its subsidiary EMRAmed. This enabled direct drug costs to be cut by some EUR 300 million in 2010 alone. The indirect savings resulting from the competition in patented medicinal products are much higher.
